What is routing and types of routing

Routing  : -

Routing is a process by which we can exchange packet from source to destination  with the help of router by selecting a best path that process is called as a Routing .

Types of Routing

There are three types of routing  Stating routing , Default routing , Dynamic routing

Now we are going to tell description of routing

1. Static Routing   : -

This routing is a type of routing which occurs manually at the route  is called as  static routing . In this administrator manually configured route on each router .This is best for small network and simple topology.

Advantage :-

Cheaper router used

Cost saving
More secure

Disadvantage :-

Administrator load always

Work on small network  only.

For example we two router like 2610 and 2620

Go to configuration mode of router we type

2610 (config)#ip route Destination network  and subnet mask  Next hop IP
2610 (config)#20.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 ( Next hop IP)s0/0
2620(config)#ip route 10.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 s0/1
verify

2610 show ip rout (routing table)

2 Default Routing :-

In the default routing it allow the network traffic without having a destination address it required only the next hop ip address. There is no required for destination IP it used only port by port which or through router go to next network like serial 0/0 etc And this is called stub.

For example we  have two router like 2610 and 2620

2610(config)#ip rout 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 s0/0
2620(config)#ip rout 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 s0/0

Dynamic Routing :-

Dynamic routing occurs with the help of protocol like Rip, Eigrp OSPF etc to find and update routing table on router . This is very easy than default routing and static routing , But you use it at expense of router CPU processes and bandwidth on the network links. A routing protocol defines the set of rules used by a router when it communication between neighbour  router.

There is three types of dynamic routing protocol :-
1 Distance vector protocol
2 Link state protocol
3 Hybrid protocol

1 Distance vector protocol

The distance vector  protocol takes device on the basis of hop count where it find the minimum number of hop count to traffic always pass via this rout that protocol doesn't take the decision on behalf on bandwidth it only take decision according to distance hop count .
Some example of distance vector protocol is like Rip and EIGRP etc.

Hop :- A packet goes through a rout is called hop.

2 Link state protocol

These are those protocol which take decision on the basis of bandwidth and delay it also create 3 type of table .

1 Routing table
2 Topology table
3 Neighbor table

OSPF is example of link state protocol.

3 Hybrid  Protocol

It the combination of distance vector protocol and link state protocol it mean it have both the feature of them .There is no set way of configuration routing protocol for use with every business .This is a task that is performed on a case by case basis. However if you understand how the different routing protocol work, You can make good business decision. For example EIGRP.
